Role Descriptions

National Youth Leadership Staff

What makes an NYLT Staffer?

The youth and adults serving as NYLT staff members model appropriate leadership skills in everything they do, creating a rich learning environment for the youth they are serving and for themselves. Servant leadership is an important NYLT leadership attitude, and it is critical that the staff model focus on participants and not themselves. Great leaders seek to serve others.

The youth and adult staff members of an NYLT course are charged with providing the participants with the best possible opportunity to learn effective leadership skills in a setting where the highest ideals of Scouting shine through. Essential to that effort is the fact that staff members use NYLT leadership skills and philosophies themselves, which provide them with an extremely effective means of sharing and leading teams. It also models the skills and the leadership ideals that the NYLT program seeks to convey.

2025 Course Sessions

Interested in Staffing NYLT 2025?

The process to start filling staff positions for NYLT 2025 has already begun.  If you are interested in helping to put on a great NYLT program, please fill out this application. Our team works from this application list to fill positions.  If you have any questions about staffing, please reach out to Heather Graf, Council Coordinator (nyltcolorado@gmail.com).

Our Course Directors for 2025 have been selected.

  • Session 1 (June 8-14) – Jon Strauss
  • Session 2 (June 22-28) – Nate Graf
  • Session 3 (July 13-19) – Randy Bruns

They are currently working on confirming Scoutmasters for 2025 sessions.

By the end of August, we will have our SPL team selected, they will then select their ASPL team.  In September we would love to have you stop by the NYLT booth at Colorado Jamboree for more information about staffing or attending NYLT as a participant. September is also our Course Directors Conference – if you are an SPL, Youth Course Lead, Scoutmaster, or Course Director you should plan on attending.

In October we will host a “Day in the Life of an NYLT Staffer” where you will go through some of the games, give some speeches, and learn more about what it means to be a staff member.  At the conclusion of this day the SPL/ASPL and Scoutmaster teams will start working on assembling their NYLT staff wish lists.  An official staff draft will then happen and you will receive a phone call/text message if you have been selected to staff.  The first staff development meeting will likely be held in November or December.  There will be a MANDATORY ALL HANDS meeting in January. Please remember that ALL staff development days, training dates, and the ALL HANDS are MANDATORY in order to staff NYLT.
