Exploring (ages 14-20)

Discover your future

Exploring is a co-ed, career-based leadership development program for young men and young women aged 14 through 20, where youth join a unit that is sponsored by a particular business or organization in order to learn more about what that career has to offer. Exploring offers exciting activities and one-on-one mentorship opportunities for youth looking to discover their future. Whether you’re a local organization looking to strengthen the community and develop your future workforce, or a young person wanting to uncover the possibilities of your future, Exploring is a great place to start

What Will I Do in Exploring?

Exploring is focused on five key areas:

  • Career Opportunities
  • Leadership Experience
  • Life Skill Development
  • Citizenship
  • Character Education.

This program features career opportunities in fields such as engineering, technology, law enforcement, medicine, computer programming, architecture, and more. Groups of Explorers are organized into “Posts,” and each Post is sponsored by a local business and focused on that business’s operations. Exploring is not an internship, it is more than that: it is an opportunity to develop as a leader and a citizen, and also to explore career opportunities in an exciting field!

How Much Does it Cost?

Each Post determines the dues per year for its participants, based on its annual activity budget. Part of the cost includes a national membership fee that goes to the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to handle the cost of essential services for those participating in approved Scouting activities, program resources, safety standards, youth protection and personal safety training, and services to councils nationwide to sustain Scouting. In addition, a Post’s costs may also include funds for its individual activities. Lastly, each youth may be required to buy a uniform (which they can wear for multiple years while in Exploring). The national membership fee is $75 per year, and the average Post dues per year are dependent on the Post and the sponsoring business (some businesses will pay for all costs, while others require the youth to pay dues).

How Can my Business Get Involved?

The Council is always looking to expand the career fields available through the Exploring program. If your company would like to give back to the community in a meaningful way, we would love for you to get involved in Exploring. Please call 303.455.5522 to connect with a district executive and learn how to get involved and:

  • Cultivate future employees
  • Prepare young adults for the transition from school to work
  • Develop future responsible and caring adults
  • Improve staff teamwork working on common goals outside of normal work
  • Contribute visibly to the welfare of the community
